Volunteers are fundamental to many departments/services at both sites of Middlesex Hospital Alliance (MHA). For example, volunteers assist in Emergency, Physiotherapy, the Resource Centre, the Business Office, Meals on Wheels, the Cafeteria, Adult Day Centre, Switchboard, and Gift Shop. Volunteers continuously contribute to the quality of care provided. MHA also welcomes young people who would like to help out through the "Volun-Teen" program. Any amount of time that you can contribute as a volunteer is greatly appreciated. If you are interested in volunteering at MHA, please contact Judy Peters 519-245-5295 Ext. 5539 to fill out an application and arrange an interview. MHA is pleased to provide co-operative student placements for both college and high school students.

History
The SMGH Auxiliary was founded in 1914 when the hospital opened. At the time, members donated fruit, vegetables, preserves and eggs to the hospital's kitchen. The big event each year was the July 1st "Tea" which the Auxiliary hosted on the front lawn of the hospital.
Over the years, Auxiliary members have supported patient care at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital through various fundraising activities and volunteer service. By 2001, Auxiliary membership had grown to just over 100 members. In 2008, the SMGH Auxiliary completed a $400,000 pledge to the hospital's Building Together campaign.
Fundraising
The SMGH Auxiliary has made a fundraising pledge of raising $1 million in support of the hospital over the next 10 years - the single largest pledge they have ever committed to raising!
Currently the Auxiliary raises money for the hospital by operating the Java Hut Coffee Kiosk and the Hospital Gift Shop, plus many other popular fundraising activities like Tag Day in May, the sale of HELLP tickets, and bake sales.
The Java Hut coffee kiosk is staffed by over 200 Auxiliary volunteers. The hours are 7:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturdays and some holidays.
The SMGH Auxiliary launched the new Java Hut coffee kiosk in July 2009. The kiosk is an important part of the Auxiliary's fundraising plans as they recently made a $1 million pledge to support the hospital. Funds to build the Java Hut were donated through a very generous gift made by David and Linda Powell.
In 2010, the Java Hut was nominated for a Pillar Non-Profit Community Innovation Award in the Category of Community Impact and was recognized as a finalist.
