The World Health Organization, declared an influenza pandemic on June 11, 2009, based on the worldwide spread of the new H1N1 influenza virus. This move to a Phase 6 level does not change the local situation or the current response, according to the London-Middlesex Health Unit website.
Locally, there have been a handful of confirmed cases of H1N1 and in all of these cases, the symptoms have been mild and patients have not needed to be hospitalized.
Good hand hygiene - washing your hands under running water and soap or with an alcohol-based hand-sanitizer - remains an important and regular practice against infection.
