Paid Parking Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have to pay for parking at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital (SMGH)?
Like all Ontario hospitals, SMGH was directed by the provincial government to implement paid parking as one strategy to help generate revenue for the hospital. Health care officials across the province agree that paid parking at hospitals may eventually be mandated by the province. Paid parking was implemented at SMGH as of July 1, 2008.

What does parking cost?
Parking rates are currently $5 per day or $2 per hour for all visitors. Visitor parking is available in the north and south lots. There is a designated drop off/pick up area that does not require payment within 15 minutes outside the Emergency entrance.

Where does the money that I pay for parking go?
The SMGH Foundation directs parking revenues to the hospital in order to help fund priority patient care needs including hospital equipment purchases and renovation/building projects. By paying for parking, you are helping to build a stronger workplace and community.

What if I don't have any coins for the machine?
The machines accept coins, bills, and credit cards. When you park, simply pay at the machine, take the receipt issued and display it (with the date and time face-up so it can be read), on your vehicle dashboard. There are two coin machines if change is needed, one in the SMGH lobby and another in the Emergency Department waiting room.

Does this parking system cost a lot to maintain?
Revenue generated from paid parking primarily supports the hospital. A small reserve fund from a portion of the revenue helps to cover the cost of parking lot improvements and upkeep such as snow removal.

What if I get into the lot and there's no parking spaces left?
With the convenient Pay and Display, there is no charge or barrier to leave any SMGH parking lot if you are unable to find a space. With almost 100,000 patient visits every year, SMGH parking can be congested at times, especially during peak hospital visiting hours.

What about parking tickets?
Precise Parklink is responsible for the patrol and monitoring of parking lots. They can issue parking tickets for infractions including improperly displayed or missing parking receipts. If a visitor parks in the staff designated lot (behind hospital), Precise Parklink can also issue a parking infraction but the parking officer makes all attempts to contact the patient regarding their vehicle in this situation. Precise Parklink retains all revenue from fines paid for parking tickets.

What if I'm just picking up my mother, or dropping my spouse at an outpatient appointment?
There is a designated drop off/pick up area that does not require payment within 15 minutes.

I was thinking about volunteering at the hospital. Do I have to pay for parking too?
Volunteers and Auxiliary Members are provided with free parking.

I live down the street from the hospital. What if everyone starts parking in my space?
The SMGH Foundation has worked closely with the municipality to ensure that our neighbours are not inconvenienced by the hospital parking system.

Who do I contact if I want more information?
Contact the parking officer at 519-245-1550 x5937.
