Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation services - for those recovering from accidents or illness - are provided for outpatients and inpatients.

 

PHYSIOTHERAPY

This department offers rehabilitation services including mobilizations, manipulations, acupuncture, gym and conditioning programs, and treatment of injury or disease through physical means. The department has particular strengths in orthopedics and the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, and geriatric rehabilitation. A doctor's referral is required to access physiotherapy services and patients are prioritized for urgency.

Students: The physiotherapy department accepts physiotherapy and occupational therapy students who are in training and completing their clinical requirements.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

The Occupational Therapy (OT) service promotes functional independence by using activity analysis to determine treatments. The therapist provides service to clients with neurological deficits, orthopaedic conditions and palliative diagnoses and is experienced in geriatric rehabilitation.

The OT provides upper extremity and cognitive and perceptual programs along with wheelchair and walker assessments and prescription. The OT is a registered authorizer with the Assistive Devices Program, seating and mobility division.

Caregivers can also contact OT regarding recommendations for home and community accessibility including equipment for bathrooms, ramps and other home modifications.

Students: The Occupational Therapy service accepts occupational therapy students who are in training and completing their clinical requirements.

SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY

Speech Language Services are available for inpatients who are experiencing communication and/or swallowing difficulties. These services are also available to adult outpatients on a limited basis. The speech-language pathologist is a registered ADP authorizer for communication devices. A doctor's referral is needed to access both inpatient and outpatient services.

MASSAGE THERAPY

 Massage treatment from a Registered Massage Therapist is available by appointment for physiotherapy clients. Contact the physiotherapy department to book. FCHS 519-693-7111 ext 2441, or SMGH 519-245-5295 ext 5589
