Surgical Services

Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital provides surgical services to the Strathroy and Four Counties catchments, and a broader geographic area through its specialized procedures. These surgical services are primarily provided through Same Day Care procedures and through Inpatient and Same Day Admission process.

SMGH continues to demonstrate excellent Wait Times for surgical services, better than provincial averages and targets. Patients are prepared for surgery in advance through telephone or face to face interviews. Family and friends waiting in the Surgical Day Care waiting room can track a patient’s progress through surgery on an electronic tracking board. The tracking board displays the patient’s location as he/she moves through the surgical areas — from preparation to operating room and on to the recovery area. The patient’s name is kept confidential and families are provides with an identification number to follow the patient’s course. Patient safety is enhanced through the attention to Surgical Site Infection monitoring and reporting; the completion of the Surgical Safety Checklist for every patient throughout the operative process and meeting and exceeding Medical Device Reprocessing Standards for surgical equipment preparation.

Patients requiring cardiovascular, neurologic or multiple trauma surgery are referred to appropriate tertiary centres.
