SMGH Auxiliary History
The SMGH Auxiliary was founded in 1914 when the hospital opened. At the time, members donated fruit, vegetables, preserves and eggs to the hospital’s kitchen. The big event each year was the July 1st “Tea” which the Auxiliary hosted on the front lawn of the hospital.
Over the years, Auxiliary members have supported patient care at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital through various fundraising activities and volunteer service. By 2001, Auxiliary membership had grown to just over 100 members. In 2008, the SMGH Auxiliary completed a $400,000 pledge to the hospital’s Building Together campaign.
The SMGH Auxiliary has made a fundraising pledge of raising $1 million in support of the hospital over the next 10 years – the single largest pledge they have ever committed to raising!
Currently the Auxiliary raises money for the hospital by operating the Java Hut Coffee Kiosk and the Hospital Gift Shop, plus many other popular fundraising activities like Tag Day in May, the sale of HELLP tickets, and bake sales.
The Java Hut coffee kiosk is staffed by over 200 Auxiliary volunteers. The hours are 7:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturdays and some holidays.
The SMGH Auxiliary launched the new Java Hut coffee kiosk in July 2009. The kiosk is an important part of the Auxiliary’s fundraising plans as they recently made a $1 million pledge to support the hospital. Funds to build the Java Hut were donated through a very generous gift made by David and Linda Powell.
In 2010, the Java Hut was nominated for a Pillar Non-Profit Community Innovation Award in the Category of Community Impact and was recognized as a finalist.
The SMGH Gift Shop is managed and staffed by Auxiliary volunteers, the Gift Shop is located in the main corridor of the hospital. The shop is open from 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on weekdays and 12 noon – 3 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
Beautiful giftware, purses, scarves and sweaters are available as are magazines and daily personal items for those staying in the hospital. Check out our cozy baby sweater sets and afghans all made by our talented volunteers.
Don’t forget to join us for the Annual Gift Shop Open House held the first weekend in November.
The Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital Auxiliary welcomes all residents of Strathroy-Caradoc and surrounding communities to become members. Volunteers are always needed. We welcome you to join us at any meeting. Membership dues are only $5 per year.
Meetings are 7:30 p.m. in the SMGH auditorium on the fourth Monday of each month, from January to May and September to November. Auxiliary meetings feature guest speakers on health-related or general interest topics. At these meetings, we present the funds we have raised over the previous months to the SMGH Foundation.
Our May meeting is a Strawberry Social and the November Annual Meeting is a Potluck Supper – both take place in the hospital cafeteria.
