A First at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital

The Middlesex Hospital Alliance (MHA) has yet another milestone to be proud of.

A total shoulder replacement was performed at the Strathroy site on Monday September 16, 2013 by Dr. Chris Chant and his team – a first for Strathroy Hospital. Prior to this, patients had to go to large hospitals for this type of surgery. The number one reason for shoulder replacement is arthritis, the same reason for hip and knee replacements.

Unlike hip and knee replacements, total shoulder replacements are not as common a procedure. People tend to cope better with an arthritic shoulder than an arthritic hip or knee and shoulders do not suffer the same wear and tear.

Dr. Chris Chant, MHA’s newest orthopedic surgeon started in April and is contributing to the already stellar orthopedic program. He joined Drs. Blokker and Rajgopal and collectively a great team has been formed. Chant’s focus includes: shoulder arthroscopy including rotator cuff, torn meniscus and ACL repair, hip and knee replacement, fractures and sports related surgery.

“We are very pleased with the quality and full service of our orthopedic program” says Nancy Maltby, Chief Operating Officer. “There is a steady stream of positive feedback from patients who have their surgery here” says Dr Chant. We are able to serve the communities of Four Counties Health Services and Strathroy right here in our own hospital.
