Job Title: Part-Time Occupational Health Specialist
Department: Human Resources
Reports to: Director of Human Resources

Position Description:
Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the Occupational Health Specialist (OHS) works collaboratively with members of the Human Resources team along with Infection Prevention and Control to support individual employees as well as the organization in the delivery of a safe and healthy work environment. The OHS plays an integral role in the provision of the OH&S programs – absence management, communicable disease surveillance, blood borne disease management, health assessments (pre-placement, referrals, respiratory fitness, illness, injury), health surveillance, health teaching and promotion, immunization, disability management – STD, LTD, WSIB; work accommodation, prevention of violence in the workplace as well as others.

The Occupational Health Specialist will be responsible for:

• Providing communicable Disease surveillance, immunization protocols and exposure management knowledge and experience
• Ensuring the completion of initial pre-placement health requirements to ensure compliance with vaccine and TB testing requirements
• Participates in the orientation program for new hires
• Providing Emergency First Aid Care, and ongoing medical treatments, crisis intervention and support to staff, volunteers and students
• Participating in Occupational Health & Safety committees including the Joint Health & Safety and Wellness Committees
• Supporting employees through their employment lifecycle as it relates to their health and well-being
• Actively managing WSIB claims including but not limited to claim submission and ongoing claims management, modified work programs, WSIB cost tracking and other related activities
• Providing effective disability case management, fitness to work, return to work assessments, reporting and development of modified work plans as appropriate
• Organizing and implementing the annual flu shot clinics for MHA staff and volunteers
• Conducting follow-ups as required for all staff exposure incidents and patient handling incidents
• Supporting safety and accident prevention specific to organizational hazards
• Working with other MHA stakeholders to manage chronic health concerns
• Facilitating the return to work meetings/modified work meetings for work related injuries
• Conducting audits for compliance with MHA Occupational Health policy
• Reporting and following up with Ministry Of Labour on occupational illness
• Working with Infection Control and the Safety Officer to ensure the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment
• Managing confidential labour relations matters in regards to attendance management

• Recording trends and reporting relevant statistics regarding short term disability
• Maintaining confidential employee health records
• Maintaining policies and procedures

Job Qualifications:
• Must provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (chicken pox)
• Must provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing within the previous 12 months
• Baccalaureate Degree, preferred in health related or science discipline
• Canadian Occupational Health Nursing Certificate (COHN)
• Two (2) years Occupational Health Specialist required (preferably in a hospital setting)
• First Aid Certificate required
• Comprehensive, working knowledge of relevant legislation and guidelines – Occupational Health & Safety Act, WSIB,WHIMIS, Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols for Ontario Hospitals MOHLTC, PIDAC Best Practices
• Experience working with MS Office (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Parklane
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in disability case management, absence management including STD, LTD and WSIB case management
• Strong assessment, health teaching and promotion skills
• Experience with continuous program quality improvement initiatives
• Demonstrated understanding and compliance with patient and employee safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all
• Excellent interpersonal communication, team and customer service skills with the ability to articulate clear expectations and work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to set priorities, solve problems with evidence-based decision making practices and resolve conflicts in a timely and efficient manner
• Good attendance and work record is essential
• Driver’s license and/or access to transportation to travel between both sites
